NRIs of the Gulf

There are over 2 million Indians working in the Gulf. Majority of them is a low paid salaried worker. Their image inside the country is of a rich community, but the fact is opposite. By the time they get to the age of 40-45, their health deteriorates. Every employer does not offer medical facilities; therefore, most of them cure themselves with off the shelf analgesics to save money. Whatever they earn, usually, is spent by their beneficiaries like father, wife, sons, in-laws, etc. Their money is spent mercilessly on worthless ceremonies, little construction, shops, etc.

By the time they retire or come back permanently, one or two marriages of the daughters, or medical treatments, etc. make them complete bankrupt. They have nothing to restart.

If the newcomers to the Gulf are advised of the insurance in the early stage, they would be in a position to get a few lakhs of Rupee to settle again after the maturity of their policies. But unfortunately, there is no guidance to the youths. As a result they spend the life in the Gulf without any proper planning of saving and they go back empty handed after a few years time.

A survey conducted in the Gulf revealed that a majority of the NRI Muslims were of the opinion that insurance is not legitimate. A large number of Keralites are in favour but majority of the Urdu speaking Muslims oppose it.

They lack the proper knowledge as well as do not have any zeal to study and research. They do not consider that it is illegal to watch pornography, films, wasting time in useless activities, but start argument on the legitimacy of the insurance. They realise their folly only when they meet with an accident, face job termination or fall seriously sick. Many NRIs finally repent for not having insured themselves but by that time it is too late.

Like the car and medical insurances, people can imagine the relief from the burden and the degree of satisfaction once they buy the life insurance cover. Whether they buy Takaful policy locally or the life insurance policies of their respective countries, the foremost responsibility of every person is to buy at least one life insurance policy.
