Although there are many illegitimate practices existing in the Muslim society, there is a strong opposition to those practices which come from the West. Historically, most of the Muslim countries had been under the Western or colonial powers. None of these powers freed those countries without bloodshed.
The freedom struggle in most of these countries were led or supported mainly by the Ulema and other Islamic parties. It was quite natural to hate and boycott every thing which was introduced by the Western arbitrators. It is true that these powers brought many a good things too, but they wiped away the wealth of those occupied countries and left them destitute. They wiped out their moral and religious values too, and gave rise to a culture with no fear of God. Today, they are no more masters but on seeing the picture of world politics today, one can say that the game is the same; only the name has changed.
They are still ruling over the Muslim world by enslaving the rulers. If any ruler dares to go against the West, he is afraid of meeting the same fate as met by King Faisal, Zia-ul-Haq or Saddam Hussain. Either assassination or hanging till death through a kangaroo court. Frequent cases of blasphemy, anti-Islamic statements and anti-Muslim acts of the Western countries enrage the fire of hatred in the Muslim minds. Consequently, opposition to the Western system is natural.
In the case of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, British rule continued for about 200 years. There was Muslim rule almost all over India when the British entered the country as traders in disguise. It was too late to realise the English intentions. Thus, it was the Muslims who initiated the war of independence. It culminated in the so called Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 led by the Ulema. Hundreds of Ulema were killed or exiled. They were made naked in the public and thousands of men, mostly Muslims, were martyred. The British very tactfully named this war as ‘mutiny’ and brought Hindu soldiers against the Muslim and sew the seeds of hatred against each other. The war was over but the hatred had just begun. The Muslim rulers were dethroned. The doors of employment were shut for the Muslims., the Islamic education, culture and the law were replaced by the Western system. The Ulema rose to the occasion, established hundreds of Madarsas.
Quite naturally, the hatred against the British as well as everything that resembles the British was inherent in the Madarsa teachings. Since the Hindus were in majority, the British used them to suppress the Muslim resistance. The hatred had grown so deep that any Muslim who had even the slightest cooperation or sympathy towards the British was deemed as sinful, fifth columnist, etc. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, as an example, too was treated as an outcast when he started his campaign to establish a university. Banking, insurance, English education, family planning, western style suits and ties, women’s education, women’s employment, etc. were treated as Haraam. As a result, even after almost 150 years, the effects of that war are still fresh in minds.
Even now the TV, Internet, etc. are also regarded as un-Islamic. Until a few years ago the loudspeaker was not legitimate for Azaan and prayers. This was due to the fact that all these inventions had come from the West. This attitude extended to the modern education too. Since the subjects like commerce, economics, accountancy, etc., due to their Western roots, are damned in the Madarsas, the knowledge of Banking, Insurance, etc. is almost nil among Muslims students.
