Due to continued fear and anti-Muslim policies of the police and the administration, the true figures of the casualties and the material loss have never been worked out. Although the Godhra train incident has been proved to be an accident by the judicial inquiries set up by the government, the state government insists that it was a conspiracy only to gain support for its anti-muslim policies.
The Muslims believe that it was designed by the same group who launched the carnage against the Muslims. It is a mockery of Indian constitution that the State has denied to accept the inquiry launched by a well known justice.
As a result, still there are several Muslims in prisons under TADA (Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Act) and POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) acts just because there is no political backing. Although some Human Rights Organisations stood to the occasion but their voice is too weak to be heard.
The official figures of death and property loss, as happens in every riot have been manipulated.
According to unofficial estimates reported by the Muslim Gazette 1-15 April 2002, over 2000 Muslims were killed or burnt alive in Gujarat riots. Over 3000 mosques, 30,000 houses, 10,000 shops, business places, factories and several thousands vendor stalls had been damaged or totally burnt and demolished.
The Ahmedabad based Islamic Relief Committee (IRC) has presented to the National Minorities Commission a 3-page list of damaged/demolished mosques, dargahs, graveyards and the Madarsas by the marauding mobs of the terrorists who belong to the well known fundamentalist party. Thousands of Muslims became refugees in 91 refugee camps in their own homeland. In addition to these refugees, over 90,000 people had to flee in order to save their lives.
Latest Situation in Gujarat
The latest situation is alarming. Several Muslims who had fled from Gujarat during the riots are willing to return but their return has been blocked by the local anti-Muslim leaders. The neighbours have occupied the Muslim houses and shops. The Muslims are offered a condition either to accept Hinduism or withdraw all cases against Hindu terrorists. The advocates have been warned by the fascist leaders not to take up any Muslim’s case.
A large number of Muslims stated this in front of Syed Hamed of Central Planning Commission, Chief Justice R.A. Mehta of Minority Commission, P.G. Nemeherwari of National Human Rights Commission and Mr. Sudarshan, Vice Chancellor Gujarat University.

Gujarat and insurance
According to a survey taken by the same Milli Gazette, the common Muslims had no knowledge about the life insurance. Those who had, said it is not permissible. If at least 50% of them had insurance of their lives and properties, the aftermath of the riot would not have been so dreadful.
It must be noted that as long as Hindu communal fundamentalist parties exist in India the riots will continue.
Gujarat looked to be the last riot as the whole world had condemned India. Even America had banned the entry of the ring leaders who led the bloodshed. But the riots are still continuing. Several riots have been reported so far after Gujarat.
The result of all the riots had been no different than the ethnic cleansing done in Gujarat but loss of lives and properties of Muslims is less. Those who believe that the riots will ever cease are living in a fool’s paradise.
If the Muslims continue to neglect the life insurance and depend upon the zakat and charity after the riots, in the next 50 years the majority of the community will consist of beggars.
Sacchar Committee report of 2007 has already delineated the present scenario of the Muslims. He found many places where the Muslim are living in the conditions worse than the Dalits. In the ongoing arguments in the Supreme Court in the case of Reservations to the Muslim community, the evidence presented to the Chief Justice shows that 40% of the Muslims are living on poverty line and 45% are below poverty line.
(The poverty line is defined as the income of Rs. 5,000 or $115.00 per annum)
